GRAPPENHALL could be the site of a Millennium Wood.

The Woodland Trust has approached Grappenhall and Thelwall Parish Council for support in attracting £40,000 from the Millennium Commission. To receive the cash, the Trust will have to match the amount.

Clr. Barbara Mawer said: "The Woodland Trust doesn't want to go ahead without local support, partly because that would create difficulties in funding the project.

"Some residents have expressed concerns which is why the Woodland Trust is planning to hold a public meeting."

No date has yet been announced for the meeting but it is expected to be in May.

Philip Wright, who farms along Broad Lane where the wood is planned, is one of those concerned about the development.

He said: "Several people think it will become a meeting place for young people and their anti-social behaviour. I won't be able to see what they're up to."

Mr Wright is also concerned about the safety of people who walk along a footpath on his land. He said: "If the wood is planted, they won't be as visible. With the spate of attacks on the other side of Warrington, I would feel worried."
