GOOD time stories were the theme of the weekend as Warrington's past players came together to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Wilderspool Stadium.

One of the funniest tales came out at the centenary dinner and involved former forward Bob Eccles.

Big Bob was helping to present a 'This is your life' type section of the evening's entertainment and it became known that the now Crosfields coach got into a little bit of trouble when contacting fans' favourite Les Boyd.

Bob phoned Les at his home in Australia to ask him if he had a message of support for the people of Warrington to mark the centenary.

Les, who had more votes than any other player in the supporters' recent choice for Wire's greatest team of all time, probably sounded a bit croaky as he responded.

Bob had got his times mixed up and put his call through to Les at 5 o'clock in the morning, Australia time.

Les, being the man that he is, took the mistake well and wished everyone in Warrington well. He revealed that he thoroughly enjoyed his spell at Wilderspool and wished he had come to Warrington earlier in his career. So do we Les!

The rumours continue to roll with regards to the takeover at Warrington Wolves. There is that much speculation that it is difficult to pick out the snippets of truth.

But I do believe that coach Darryl Van de Velde will be staying with the club. The fact that he is building a team for next season and has been authorised a budget to work with does not suggest he is about to leave.

And Darryl has admitted himself previously that he has never walked away from a fight. With money behind him it would seem Darryl, at last, can put the gloves on and enter the ring for round one.

Now what we need is news of new signings to strengthen the case for the new consortium.
