CONGLETON Cubs are busy thinking up sponsorship schemes to raise the £10,000 they need for the millennium trip of a lifetime.

The youngsters from the 1st Buglawton Remus Cub pack in Congleton are planning to celebrate the millennium at a Scout camp in the USA.

Some 20 boys are hoping to link up with their counterparts from the Boys Scouts of America for the year 2000 festivities in Houston next August.

The boys are aged between nine and 15, and need to reach their target to pay for their air fares to the States.

The fund-raising initiative is being led by pack leaders Richard Humpage, from Ayrshire Way, and Peter Trickey, from St John's Road.

They are hoping to attract grants for the two-week trip as well as sponsorship from local firms.

"We wanted to go somewhere different and out of the ordinary for the millennium, and got the idea of Houston through the international department of the Scout Association," said Mr Trickey.

"Richard and I will be travelling to Houston next month to find out how the American Scouts aim to celebrate the year 2000.

"We hope to be able to go to a camp next August, and aim to start fund-raising for the trip in October."

Anyone interested in sponsoring the boys can ring Mr Trickey on 281719.
