THE Cheshire branch of the Association of Teachers and Lecturers is calling for students and parents to be aware of new deadlines for exam appeals.

Following criticism of the lengthy appeal process following GCSE and A level exams tight new deadlines have been introduced by exam boards.

Requests for remarking an A or AS level paper must be with the boards by Friday August 27 and for GCSE papers by Friday September 3.

The main appeals period has also been brought forward from September 30 to September 20.

"Branch officials regard the new deadlines as fierce but fair," said Congleton member Colin Newcombe.

"We welcome the tighter deadlines as they should enable candidates who successfully challenge their A level result to gain entry to their university of first choice without losing a year."

He added that there was concern however that pupils would not know about the new deadlines and could miss out by waiting for schools to re-open.
