VILLAGERS look set to lose their fight to stop an 80 ft high mobile phone tower being erected near their homes.

Councillors will be advised to give the go-ahead for the equipment at Fields Farm, Calverley whem they meet later this week.

Telecom Securicor Cellular Radio Ltd have been asked to look for alternative sites including Wardle Industrial Estate where it would fit in with existing high buildings.

"The tower will be an eye-sore and a health hazard," said objectors. They, along with parish council members have demanded safety assurances from the company to the borough council.

Planning officers report that the equipment complies with the latest safety guidelines and that 'there have been no recorded incidences where Cellnet radio transmissions have put the public at risk".

They advise councillors to approve the application subject to landscaping conditions.
