Medical fury over delaying tactics

Michael Kenwright with David Mowat Michael Kenwright with David Mowat

A HAEMOPHILIAC says he is frustrated after the contaminated blood bill he campaigned relentlessly for was deferred in the House of Commons.

Michael Kenwright, of Grappenhall, desperately wants to get compensation for people infected with blood diseases by the NHS after he was infected with hepatitis dating back to when the Government used to buy blood products from America.

Those products, used to treat his haemophilia, were from donors in prisons and included drug addicts who were paid for their contributions.

Lord Morris of Manchester put forward a private members bill asking for a report, by Lord Peter Archer, on infected blood products.

The report recommended the Government apologises and pays compensation to the victims. In return the Government agreed to pay those with HIV, but not hepatitis.

But the Government said it was not appropriate for the bill to be passed without debate as time had run out before it came up on the order paper and the decision was called by junior whip MP Kerry McCarthy.

Mr Kenwright, of Chester Road, said: “I think what the Government has done is perverse. It is using delaying tactics to keep the bill from being read. They are condemning those that are affected and ill to continue a life of pain and suffering.

“Someone who doesn’t have the morals to let the bill through is not fit to call themselves a human being, let alone honourable.

“Blocking this bill has just proven to me, and many like me, the kind of Government we are now ruled by, and the kind of immoral people who are making the decisions.

“Plans to visit this MP’s constituency for peaceful demonstrations by the victims of this disaster during election campaigning are already being considered.”

The Contaminated Blood (Support for Infected and Bereaved Persons) Bill, signed by 113 MPs from all parties, was supposed to be read in the House of Commons on Friday, following a lobby, attended by those infected and their familes, with the first reading in the House of Lords on Wednesday.

The bill had already gone through the first three stages of the House of Lords and was supported by Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South, David Mowat.

The bill, which will now be read on February 26, will give legislative effect to all the recommendations of Lord Archer’s two-year inquiry into the contaminated blood disaster, which left 4,670 people with haemophilia infected with HIV and/or hepatitis C.

All of us, in the Contaminated blood community share Mike's anger and despair following last week's events. With this Bill the Government had a chance to finally deal with this issue. They had a chance to finally let dying men and women spend their remaining days with some peace of mind and financial independence. Furthermore, with its recommendations about prion filtration the Bill would have been a good start in ensuring that the British blood supply is as safe as we can make it for us and for those who follow. But no; it was blocked. Who gave the order we may never know, but even though she was technically a pawn in this political game I think that as a member of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Haemophilia, Kerry McCarthy was at the least ill-advised to be the junior whip to call: 'Object'. With that one small word she played her part in consigning sick, dying and bereaved people to having to battle for what is right. I have always said that this tragedy was wholly avoidable, and I stand by those words, but if only the Prime Minister would take this matter up as a personal challenge, we could yet see some light where there is presently only darkness.

The Government has used Crown Immunity to avoid transparency on this issue. The truth about NHS contaminated blood will come out one day, please let it not be after we have all died of the fatal blood-borne infection hepatitis C which takes decades to eventually destroy the liver. It is a fatal disease and those of us infected in the 70's and 80's are dying at a statistical rate of one a month. We would like compensation to leave to our loved ones, or at the very least an explanation of what happened, what went wrong with the NHS blood bank.

Peter Longstaff, RIP
Bob Pernell. RIP
Bob Theskill. RIP

All faught this perverse government as long as they were able, now sadly missed

Just four friends who are no longer with us today as a direct result of NHS Blood products for our treatment.

David Fielding. Emergency liver transplant
Hayden Lewis. Emergency liver transplant.

Two very brave people who now face the real prospects of a significantly shorten life.
as a direct result of NHS Blood products for our treatment.

3000 other victims of infection from NHS blood products still face the probability of the same horrible end to their lives.

Harry Cohen MP Labour MP ( Leyton & Wanstead)
claimed £310,000 in expenses on a 'second home'

Carol Longstaff widow of Peter Longstaffs, received nothing for the loss of her beloved husband.

Tony McNulty Minister ( Harrow East)
Labour minister has admitted claiming £60,000 of expenses on his parents' home.

Jill Pernell, widow of Bob Pernell received nothing from this uncaring government for the poisoning of her beloved husband by NHS contaminated blood products.

David Chaytor MP (Bury North)
Took nearly £13,000 for the flat in London after it was paid off in 2004.

Sue Theskill, widow of Bob Theskill. Still has to live with the loss of her husband and the financial hardships his family are left to face alone

We are now living with a government who put no value on a life unless it is their own.

For over 25 years consecutive governments have ignored the pleas for justice from the victims of what is now recognized as the worst medical tragedy in the history of the N.H.S.
Its scandalous.

It disgusts me how yet again the UK Government have pushed us to one side over the contaminated blood issues, I along with many other Haemophiliacs was poisoned with Hepatitis C by the NHS when I was 8 years old, it was only out of luck I escaped the HIV infection. Nearly 2,000 haemophiliacs have died as a result of exposure to the contaminated blood in what leading medical expert Lord Winston called "the worst treatment disaster in the history of the NHS". If this would have been any other disaster where so many people had died there would have been an inquiry but not in this case because in the words of my MP Charles Clarke, "The Government are worried that if they admit liability there may be legal questions to answer also they are worried about how much money it will cost if they have to compensate", well in my opinion that is tough the doctors and the government knew the blood they were giving small children was contaminated but they didnt know how bad the risk was, they used us as guinea pigs and now they wont face up to there actions. So many haemophiliacs have needlessly died at the hands of the people we put our trust in. Please Gordon Brown and your government do the right thing, WE WILL NOT GO AWAY.

This Bill is not just about compensating those infected or bereaved. It also aims to make certain that all blood used in the UK is as safe as possible for EVERYONE, not just haemophiliacs. It is crucial that this Bill is passed immediately to ensure that this happens quickly, particularly as one of the diseases it would remove is vCJD.

Government after Government have ignored the plight of this minority group. They were infected through no fault of their own. It is time the Government sorted this issue once and for all.

Come on Gordon , do the right thing make this bill happen. Increase the safety of blood for everyone and allow this group to get on with living what is left of their lives.
