End to recession welcomed

NICK Bent, Labour’s Warrington South MP hopeful, has welcomed the news that the country is no longer in a recession.

He spoke out after it was announced that the country’s economy grew for the final quarter of 2009 and that the number of unemployed people had dropped.

“This is positive news for Warrington. The economy and jobs are the number one concern of residents, and Britain’s return to growth will come as a relief. This global recession was hard for some people, and a worry for many, and the support the Labour Government has given to local families and businesses has really minimised the pain,” he said.

The Labour candidate also pointed out that in November 2009 there were 4,748 unemployed people in the town but in December 1992 during the last recession the figure was 7,077 people.

Mr Bent added: “Labour is the party of fairness and our actions to protect people from the worst of this global recession have paid off. Only Labour is committed to continued support for the economy during 2010 and to ensuring that the benefits of prosperity are shared fairly.”
