Grandma Barbara’s close shave

BEING the cause of your grandchildren’s fear is the last thing a loving grandmother would want.

But for Barbara Gee, aged 46, it was the risk she had to take to give a cash boost to a worthy cause.

Barbara, a shop assistant at B and M Bargains in Time Square, was touched by the story of baby Scott Holder who died of an incurable DNA disorder in August and decided to raise funds for The Scott Foundation.

The charity was launched by Scott’s parents Mark Holder, aged 28, and Sarah Bain, aged 23, of Doeford Close, Culcheth. The foundation sponsors research into mitochondrial cytopathy, the fatal disorder which took their son’s life three days before his first birthday.

Barbara, of Finningley Court, Padgate, said: “I just wanted to do something different for The Scott Foundation and have my head shaved.

“It was quite long before so I was a bit worried but I thought it suited me and everybody says it suits me short.

“It is so easy now, I don’t have to get up and brush it and it is dry within two minutes.

“But my grandchildren wouldn’t come near me at first!”

She had her head shaved at Warrington Market’s Pinks hairdressing salon and has raised nearly £400.

Scott’s parents hope the research could pave the way for a cure to the illness.
