Warrington Guardian scoops top prize at O2 Media Awards

THE Warrington Guardian enjoyed success at the O2 Media Awards last night by being named newspaper of the year for the second successive time.

And education reporter Miranda Newey was named young reporter of the year for her investigative work.

The Guardian won the title ahead of daily and weekly papers in the Cheshire/Merseyside region with runners-up including the Liverpool Echo, Southport Visiter, Runcorn and Widnes Weekly News and Wirral Globe.

The judging panel said the Warrington Guardian delivered news and sport stories that consistently set the agenda for national print and broadcast media. They said: “Its news reporters weren’t afraid to stick their noses in where it hurts.”

Miranda, who has been with the paper for 18 months, was praised for her stories including revelations of a taxpayer-funded head teacher conference in the Lake District and the tale of a vicar with an unusual collection of naughty postcards.

Judges said she was a rising star of the industry.

Crime reporter Nicola Davies was runner-up in the feature writer category - won by Paddy Shennan from the Liverpool Echo.

They said she showed talent beyond her years, praising her work on the reaction to the Garry Newlove anniversary and an interview with a judge.

While chief photographer Mike Boden was runner-up in the photographer of the year category.

His moving pictures of a funeral and a Warrington Wolves game captured the judges imagination. Mike was similarly honoured at last year's awards.

There were also prizes for Granada Reports, BBC Radio Merseyside and BBC North West Tonight at the awards held at the O2 centre in Preston Brook.
