Good night for Tories in Penketh by-election

IT was a strong night for the Conservatives in two parish council by-elections held in Penketh last night.

Peter Elton won the Penketh West ward from Labour, polling 311 votes to 176.

The Liberal Democrats finished third with 141.

And it was the Lib Dems who triumphed in the Penketh East ward after a recount.

Andrew Barnes, election agent of Jo Crotty - Warrington South candidate for the party in the general election, edging the Conservatives by five votes.

Labour were third.

The Tories polled around 50 per cent more votes than its nearest rivals when the two results are combined.

Paul Kennedy, constituency agent for Warrington Conservatives, said it was a strong night for his party.

He added: "Despite a negative campaign run by our opponents, the Conservatives came out on top.

"This shows the Conservatives are the only challenge to Labour in Warrington South."

Not really Jack, not everything is a conspiracy.
As it clearly states in the story, the Tories polled the most votes by a large margin across both wards and are claiming it as a strong night for themselves too.
Hope this helps

Not really - at the very least the claim kin the headline should have been taht the tories clain it was a good night.

"Tories polled the most votes by a large margin across both wards" not particuarly relevant as we don't have a PR system of voting.

Gareth is buying Paul Kennedy's spin.

Let me suggest another way of looking at this result, Tories lose one seat to the Liberal Democrats and gain one from Labour, Net result:
Liberal Democrats + 1
Tories 0
Labour - 1

The Tories will get more votes in one of the few areas of the town where they were traditionally strong and Liberal Democrats are beginning to make a sigificant showing. But the Tories shouldn't celebrate losing seats, unless they are desperate enough to feel that is a success.

I think all your comments prove Bob is that all parties are well engaged in spin.
Even those who are running a joint administration at the Town Hall.
Perhaps you'd be better served worrying about that rather than sniping at papers.
I think when all parties think we are "buying spin" then I can feel pretty confident our political coverage is neutral and about where it needs to be.

We also dont have a PR exec, We never have, all that has changed is that now the Tories and Liberals are the ones stopping voters being represented on the exec.
