SO I am not a true fan then Mr Briers?

I feel I must write to express my complete and utter disgust at the comment made by Lee Briers, of Warrington Wolves, in the Guardian edition of September 18.

I did not go to Perpignan for the play off debacle (there is no other way to describe it) against Les Catalan Dragons, so in Lee Briers’ eyes I am not a true supporter of Warrington, as only those that were present are the true fans in his opinion.

I would like to advise Mr Briers that I am now entering my 33rd year as a Warrington supporter. I have been a season ticket holder for many years, both at The Halliwell Jones Stadium and Wilderspool Stadium, and I have travelled the length and breadth of the country, as well as abroad to France a few times, to support Warrington RLFC. Yes, Lee, I was in Perpignan earlier this year when Warrington played so well that they lost 54-16.

I looked into travelling across to France and found that the trip was going to cost a minimum of £300 plus spending money.

I could afford the trip, but a point Lee chose to overlook is that maybe many families could not afford it. But, to be honest Mr Briers, after yet another season of false hype, abysmal performances, the promise from Doug Hoyle of ‘a world class coach’ which proved hollow, and a season of watching you (Briers) disappear into the background whenever the going got tough.

I honestly did not think you and your mates were worthy of such expenditure.

I have played rugby league myself and I can very easily tell when a player or team is not trying. Those poor people who were unfortunate enough to be present in France put more effort into getting there than some of the team put into playing.

The smiling faces of some of the players when they had just lost 46-8, were unacceptable and they seemed quite happy that the season was over and they could get on with packing their bags and booking flights to Australia or other holiday destinations.

The fact is Lee that you and your mates have taken the mickey out of Warrington supporters for far too long and maybe now they are beginning to realise it and are keeping their money in their pockets. Who can blame them? You and the rest of the team can’t for sure. You fail to deliver the goods so many times that you have made the once proud and feared name Warrington RLFC the laughing stock of rugby league. Maybe in future before attacking the fans who did not attend you could direct your comments at yourself and your team mates, who have ‘failed to turn up’ on many, many occasions in the past.
