THE number of bin lorries carrying landfill waste through a housing estate to Gatewarth Tip will treble from next month.

Residents are incensed by the move that will see 450 bin lorries call at the site every day, compared to the 160 wagons calling there at present.

Elizabeth Murrell, of Bond Street, fumed: “We are not happy about it. Come October 1, the traffic is going to treble. We are getting A-road traffic on a C-road.”

The route to the tip is along Old Liverpool Road and Forrest Way, via the new Saxon Park development and homeowners living near to the affected roads only found out about the increase earlier this month.

Some were only told after members of Sankey Bridges Residents’ Association and Clr Pat Wright (LAB – Bewsey and Whitecross) visited homes last weekend.

Clr Wright says the traffic along Old Liverpool Road is already a problem for residents as vehicles parked on the side of the road leave space for only one car to pass at a time. Higher traffic levels would only increase residents’ woes.

The type of waste coming to the site was also a major complaint.

“It is not Warrington’s waste, it is Manchester’s and Mersey’s waste that is coming in to the tip. We [Warrington Borough Council] are going down the route of recycling and getting people to use these new blue bins and we are saving going to landfill but we are taking other people’s waste,” she said.

Only earlier this month rubbish on a bin lorry heading to Gatewarth Tip ‘spontaneously combusted’, leaving residents facing more bin lorries daily concerned for their safety.

Mrs Murrell said the road leading from Saxon Park to Forrest Way was so narrow that if there was a build up of bin lorries emergency services would struggle to get down the route.

The 69-year-old added: “There are times I think that Sankey Bridges is the forgotten part of Warrington. While everyone else is getting road improvements, we are getting left behind. It is not good enough. ”

Sankey Bridges Residents’ Association and Clr Wright will be organising a public meeting next month for residents to voice their concerns about the bin lorry journey increases.
