A PRIMARY school that was said to require special measures by Ofsted inspectors is failing to meet the standards of the children’s abilities.

The Ofsted report that was published following the Bruche Primary School’s second monitoring inspection in June said that the standards and achievement of the current year two and six children were not as high as they should be.

Year two pupils’ standards were below targets in maths and year six students were failing to meet the targets in English and maths.

The inspectors did however praise Lynne Mullen, the new head teacher, for making a significant and positive impact on the school.

The improvement in the quality of teaching was singled out as being good, with teachers being confident in their lesson planning and classroom management.

The report was the second since the school became subject to special measures in September 2007.

Miss Mullen said: “The teachers and children have worked hard to address the points raised in the original inspection.

“The children are what makes this school so special and they have responded well to our new initiatives.

“Most of all we are proud of what they have achieved.

And we look forward to future achievements with a renewed sense of expectation.”
