THIS is the brutal attack on a swan by two dogs in Sankey Valley Park captured on film by a shocked bystander.
People watched in horror as the female swan, which had been sitting on her eggs, was repeatedly mauled by what is believed to be a pitbull and a Staffordshire bull terrier.
A fisherman was among those who tried to separate the animals from the bird. But RSPCA officers could not save the swan due to its horrific wing and neck injuries.
David Ashton, aged 39, of Woolston, was fishing with a friend when the pitbull-type dog pounced on the swan at around 5.30pm on Friday.
He said: "A white pitbull and a brown Staffy were off their leads and the white dog went straight for the nest.
"He grabbed the female swan and started ragging it but the swan managed to get away and the dogs and their owner carried on walking.
"But about half-an-hour later they came back. The dogs were still off their leads and the pitbull went straight for the nest again."
The swan managed to free itself and made a desperate bid for safety in the canal only to be followed by the white dog.
Mr Ashton said: "She managed to get back on her nest but the dog dragged her out of the reeds and on to the footpath where the brown dog also started attacking it.
"The dog took no notice of its owner. It was well out of control."
The owner, who has not been identified, did make attempts to call his dogs off and was seen to jump in the river to try to separate the white dog from the swan, which is a protected species.
The swans and their eggs, of which only two remained out of seven, had created great interest among visitors and had sparked calls from Whittle Hall councillors for the restoration of resident rangers in an effort to protect the nest, which was in a vulnerable position on the canal bank.
Dr Alex Symonds, aged 56, from Callands had gone with his wife to visit the swans and also witnessed the attack, capturing the horrific scene on film.
He said: "It could have been a child. We are all so upset about this and want to see the owner prosecuted."
An RSPCA spokesman said: "This was a very sad incident which must have caused great suffering to the swan involved, and the RSPCA would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened, or knows anything about the dogs allegedly involved." The RSPCA can be contacted on 0300 1234 999 in confidence.
Police are investigating.

I am a dog owner myself and would never let my dogs off the lead near any other animals or children. I completely agree that Licences need to be brought back. I also think that the RSPCA should have alot more authority like the Americans do.

What amazes me is that having had the dogs attack the swan once, this idiot brings them back half an hour later to finish off the job.

As other posters put, it is the fault of the owner not the dog, and this type of dog needs a strong owner, of which this owner isn't.
Some adults today obviously think it is okay to let their dogs run wild just like some do their kids, thus ruining it for the rest. People need to take responsibility.

The maximum penalty for killing a swan is six months in prison and I hope they send him down for the full stretch. Then there's the fact that he owns a pit bull which is banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
There are notices everywhere warning people to stay away from the swan's nest and this clown walks past it with two dangerous dogs off their leads. One attacks the swan and then he walks past again half an hour later, with the dogs still off the lead, to finish the job. There's no doubt he is negligent and I hope they really punish him for it.
As has been said already, what if it was a child?

He should have put them on the lead on the way back at least.
The dogs should be destroyed and he should be prosecuted.

Id like to say a big thank you to the RSPCA guys who attended last Friday. I was concerned that the swan would be left suffering over night but the inspector swiftly and very sensitively handled the situation.

believe me there are many dogs that would've attacked this swan. the owner is to blame for not being in control of his dogs. someone said "next time it could be a child" oh purleeze, before people start making statements such as that, do your research instead of believeing all the media feeds you!

You wanted stats so I thought I would provide you with some. It is quite hard to get stats for this country so I thought I would use some from America, were all of the big bad "Pit Bulls" live.
This is from a group called the American Temperament Test Society, as here they test the temperament of dogs at the owners wishes. The scores are as follows;
Dog Pass Rate
Pitbull 84.3%
Beagle 80.3%
Bearded Collie 53.3%
Border Collie 80.3%
Welsh Corgi 75.4%
Chihuahua 70.3%
Springer Spaniel 84.5
Golden Retriever 84.2
Labrador 91.8%

As you can see the Pitbull and the staffie do very well when compared to other dogs with only the labrodor coming out a lot higher. Now I realise that this isn't a perfect test and that some Pitbull's and staffies are vicious but you can't tar them all with the same brush.

Also other breeds of dogs do bite, for example last year it was in the MEN that a border collie bit part of a young girls nose off, but I suppose that is different isn't it?

I would like to point out at this point that yes the white dog may possible of been a pit bull but the other one was NOT a Staffordshire bull. It was a cross breed of sorts. Its head was the wrong shape, it had longer legs and a fatter body. My family are responsible and loving owners of our dog. Our dog is a family pet and is brilliant with our children and others who come to play. However when walking Cj he is ALWAYS kept on a lead in the park because of the wildlife, children and other dogs, also this is just good common curtsey towards other people. We all have the right to enjoy the park but I feel some dog owners (mostly the older generation) have a strong opinion on how as they put it "dangerous dogs" should be controlled. 9 times out of ten when we are in the park their dogs are off the lead. It is always their dog who comes over to ours, we have to politely ask the owner to call their dog or restrain them. When we do usually they say "oh the dog is friendly, his alright", but when we say "yes thats all very well but our dog isnt keen on yours" the owner on most occasions Tuts or moans. I have had countless arguments with other dog owners, when asking them to call their dogs or put them on the lead until we go pass. All these owners that I have seen their dog might not be a dangerous breed yet they still pose a threat to my children, me and Cj being off the lead. It should be one rule for all or not at all. I feel people also make comments on certain topics in this case breeds of dogs without doing they research first. I have been stopped a few times since this incident, and I do feel on edge every time I walk Cj now. You just know that people are pointing staring even shaking their heads in disgust. Please spare a thought for the nice dogs out there. Just like people there are horrible ones but also good one. Its very sad that only bad press ever gets written about these dogs. I feel you should report both sides of this so called dangerous dog. Come to ours any-time see for yourselves. Meet Cj. From Marie Donno.
