Town up to the test?

10:24pm Thursday 17th April 2008

WARRINGTON Town have the daunting task of facing a side that beat Ajax earlier this week when they host Sheffield FC on Saturday.

Sheffield are the oldest football club in the world, having been formed in 1857, and took on the Dutch giants at Bramall Lane on Sunday as part of their 150th anniversary celebrations, which have also included a visit from Pele and a match against Italian champions Inter.

Sheffield clinched a 2-0 win against a youthful Ajax side but Town are hoping to take advantage of the fact that Saturday's match at Cantilever Park, kick-off 3pm, will be the visitors' sixth game in 10 days.

With manager Paul Moore away on holiday last week, assistant Mike Walsh took charge as Town climbed to 13th position in the UniBond First Division with a 2-0 win at Brigg on Saturday - their fifth victory in seven games.

The Yellows now finish the season with three fixtures against promotion-chasing sides - they host Cammell Laird on Tuesday at 7.45pm before finishing at Stocksbridge on April 26 - and Walsh is hoping results will give the team confidence to challenge at the top next year.

Walsh, who has been involved in the youth set-ups at Wrexham and Manchester City and was Moore's assistant at Leek, said: "Sheffield have had four games this week including a game against Ajax so we hope we'll be playing a tired side with suspensions and injuries. We think we can get a result.

"Cammell Laird are always tough because they're so physical but we beat Stocksbridge 3-0 a few weeks ago and I think if we could get seven points out of nine that would be good. But hopefully we can get all nine.

"And it will be a good test to see where we're at and what we need to do in the summer."
