A NEW rain tax' will be levied on householders in Warrington from today, Tuesday, as the new financial year begins.
Homeowners will be charged for rain that falls on their roofs in an effort to raise cash for the Government.
The Government has been accused of 'sneaking in' the tax by disguising it as an environmental charge.
"All we are trying to do is stop people using so much water. If we all used less, less would evaporate and less would fall as rain," said a spokesman.
"Therefore, it makes sense that if you charge people for the rain that falls on their home they will begin to use less water.
"We are saving the planet for our children," he said.
But infuriated residents do not see things the same way, with one man denouncing Warrington as a police state'.
A group has been set up called 'Let it rain' which is providing tips on how to dodge the tax, including:
Covering your roof and gutters with umbrellas.
Planting tall trees in your garden.
Relocating your entire house to central Africa.
