TV CREWS from Sky News captured a night out in Warrington on Saturday - painting an ugly picture of a town plagued by drunk yobs.

Chief correspondent Stuart Ramsay visited Bridge Street with the help of cameramen who filmed five police officers tackling drunken revellers.

The video segment shows a grey-haired woman lying in the road after seemingly being attacked in a fight, as two couples argue over a taxi.

The reporter says that the police he accompanied pointed the finger at staggered opening hours and a cheap booze culture.

And he claims that in one four-hour period, he did not meet a single person who was sober and that most could not actually speak'.

Face it what is there to do in Warrington of a weekend? You can either go a watch the wire, go on a bender round town or if you are poor you have stop in and get leathered on cider or something else! No wonder theres anarchy on the streets its not exactly the cultural centre of the UK!

Saying that its no worse than any other place. Look at horrible towns like Widnes and Runcorn, where would we all rather live, here or there? Its all been blown out of proportion by Sky and even the Guardian.

Anyway roll on the 8 Feb! Casual Army! Casual Army!

What is it with you and your obsession with Widnes you clown?

It's attitudes like yours that are fodder for these sorts of stories.

Anyone whose lives are that empty that they need to fill their weekends with alcohol fuelled binging needs their head banging.

It's a sorry state of affairs that the nations favourite pass time has become getting absolutely plastered, having a fight, becoming ill then ending up as another weekend statistic .

Let's just see what there is to do at the weekend in Warrington then...

We have a 10 screen cinema.
We have LA Bowl.
We have plenty of restaurants to go for a good meal.
We have decent bars and pubs outside of the town centre where people can enjoy a sociable drink without fear of having their head stoved in by a drunken stranger.

Failing that, what's wrong with having friends round for a sociable evening in without getting hammered?

There is plenty to do in this town if a little thought is applied, sadly though for people like Ste and the small number of idiots who blight the town centre on a weekend this sort of thinking is beyond their mental capacity. It is these tools that are giving this town a bad rep that it does not deserve.

There is the same to do in Warrington as any other town or city. From Cinema to bowling to watching TV to reading a book to playing on the Xbox. Yes, you could even go out for a meal or a drink but there is no need to 'get leathered'. What is wrong with these people? Drink should be twice as expensive, the legal age should be increased, the police should issue more on the spot fines. If you want to 'get leathered', do it at home where it doesn't affect anyone else, otherwise, go into town & have a good night out.

What a great place to start helping and encouraging the youth with the Warrington Wolves. Maybe they can step up their community programmes and have a couple of evenings a month with some of these kids who have nowhere to go and nothing to do. Start with dishing out "quid a kid" tickets for certain matches and fill up the stands. Let's face it these kids are the next generation of supporters.
"Bring it on wire, this year is for us!"

What a absolute disgrace..they should be ashamed of themselves!...and not all of them were exactly youths either,, maybe the ,,errmm (adults) might help if they make a better example of how to behave. And has far has having nothing to do in Warrington theres plenty to entertain yourself with,,,, surely this behavior is not because there is nothing else to do!!... If the drink dont agree with you,,, DONT BLOODY DRINK IT!

I fear for my thirteen year old son, currently he is happy to play football and playstation like any other normal kid. I am under no illusions that as he gets older he will want to spread his wings which will include a night out in Warrington town centre. I swear I will not sleep at night for worry, not because I fear he will do something stupid, but because someone else will do something too him. You should be able to go out and feel safe, not feel like this, the worlds gone mad.

I think everyone is missing the point here, Warrington Town has become so violent over the years is disgraceful, not forgeting that saturday nights antics were caused by alcohol and Gary Newlove bless his soul was killed by yobs becuase of alcohol, this town needs a good bloody sorting out if you ask me and its about time we all face up to the fact that warrington is becoming more and more driven by people who go out to fight and cause trouble than having a good time, i'd rather in in my living room with a bottle of wine and a good dvd then enter our town centre again. Sky news stated an old couple were knocked to the ground because of a fight over a taxi by someone much younger than them, do people not look after each other anymore, not to mention respect each other. it disgusting. Sky news should be there every weekend and show the country exactly what a state the people of warrington are like under the influence of alcohol. p.s bring justice to Gary newlove and his family may he rest in peace. x

After watching the report on Sky news I felt slightly ashamed to be a resident of Warrington. I'm not saying Warrington is worse than any other town or city, but the reporter got a true taste of what Warrington night life is really like, and how drunken behaviour does fuel violence in our town.
I have experienced a similar incident to what happened to the silver haired lady whilst waiting for a taxi in that exact same spot. I was pulled to the floor by 2 men whilst trying to get in a taxi. I guess it would help if the queue for the white taxi's at the bottom of Bridge Street was supervised.
Most of the trouble in town happens on the streets. I think the bouncers and bar staff handle problems within their premises brilliently. Any sign of violence or aggression the punters are kicked out. Maybe they should be a policy that these punters are put in a taxi and sent home rather than allowing them to venture into the next bar.
I think another answer would be to bring in the banned from one banned from all policy that Stockton Heath already uses effectively.

Sadly I don’t know Ste of the south stand casuals, but I wish I did, cos he knows the score.

There might be a 10 screen cinema, and bowling and resturants but they all shut at midnight, this generation don’t want to go home then, we want to party and that’s how it should be, you only live once, live life to the full Im always told, so why not go on a bender in town, its only certain people who brawl, majority of us just wanna have a good drink and a rave…. Wots wrong with that.

And as for the bars on the outside of town I hope you don’t mean Stockton Heath… fights every night, and every single person is sniffing coke in the toilets, you think the town centre is the only bad part, you wanna open your eyes!

This town is a dump, and its gona get worse with Smiths re-opening unless they make the age limit higher. Don’t get on Ste’s back, hes just doing the same as all youngsters in this generation. You can either go out with your mates and get merry, or stay in.. on your own… I know which one I choose!

I'm not too sure that the Sky news coverage was objective, however the concerns about violence in the town centre on, let's face it, any night of the week are VERY real.

In the mid 1980's when I was at college in the town we had a very friendly town centre with little violence and a good atmosphere -it was a great place to spend a weekend evening. There were only a few pubs and clubs back then, but it was always a good place to be. Nowadays it's like a war zone. Friends of my age (mid 30's - mid 40's) now avoid the town centre like the plague, preferring to go out to places like Liverpool which is by far a friendlier place to be in the evenings. The trouble in Warrington is most definitely drink fuelled and from what I've heard often involves groups of what can only be described as 'idiots' from out of town who travel in to sample the melee that the local council have in part created due to their poor handling of licensing in the late 90's/early 00's, and that the understaffed and under-motivated local police have to deal with. I never thought I'd feel intimidated standing in a Taxi queue or getting the bus home in my home town on a Sat night. I was very wrong, and I believe the situation is now irrecoverable without some drastic changes to licensing laws and (unfortunately) arming the police. Desperate times require desparate measures.

Sadly Mr Young your naivety is astounding. You might think that you are the only generation who wants to go out and party and have a good time but I am old enough to remember when you could go out in Warrington for a good night out without fearing for your safety and we're only talking 10 years ago, which therefore puts me in the same generation as many of the current idiots that go out in the town.

The problem with many in the current generation is that all they want to do is get as bladdered and out of control as possible. We never felt the need to do that back when we were teens so tell me Mr Young, what do you think has changed?

As for your sweeping generalisations regarding Stockton Heath, clearly you are not speaking from first hand experience.

As for Ste, he's a moron simple as and I pity you for believing that he 'knows the score' as is nothing more than a one-eyed bigot of an individual.

In my opinion these measures worked, there was an orderly que for the taxi wit non of the normal hussle & bussle that you normaly get with the drunken yobs pushing in front of you.

Surely the council should be looking at this option again, if i was the major i would be ashamed to call this "my town", any views?

Dave.... Stop being an arse,
If you cant go out to town without fearing for ur life.... stay in!
I go out all the time, never fight, but dont fear for my life, stop being a wet lettece!
I go Stockton Heath once a month and have seen 1st hand, how bad it is there. Posh boys and girls doing posh drugs! Full of it round there.
Anyway, people dont get beat up for nothing, is cos they shout there mouth off or answer someone back, someone says something to u on a night out and u come back at them, expect a beatin, keep ur mouth shut and ur fine, turn the other cheek I think it might be known as!
Answer someone back and ur asking for trouble, if you wanna stick up for yourself, be handy with your fist, if not, just keep quiet.

All the trouble in town is in Big Bar, Medicine McCauleys and Bar Zero, if you dont want trouble, stay away, simple.

And as for pittying me, dont bother, I am the new generation. This is how we think, we dont wanna cause trouble, its just a few idiots in town, dont expect people respect you cos you might be older, doesnt work like that when your an adult, you will be respected on how you treat others. Tell us what to do, you will be told right back!

I agree with you Lee, the night service was sound, they only put it on at xmas to reduce the fights around the festive period, this should definately be used each week. They used to have people manning the taxi ranks, but as there was no polive in site, these people got abused and ive not seen any since. Need more police on a friday and saturday night, or at least get them to stand in the right places, standing at weatherspoons isnt the answer, theres sod all trouble there, get outside big bar and 53 degrees, that will sort it out!

I was shocked to discover the old woman on sky news was actually my nan, she was knocked over when she was caught in the cross-fire, luckly she was just a bit shocked after banging her head.

inresponse to the people that say there plenty to do in warrington not many 21 year old such as my self want to play bowling or sit in a restaurant,
have you noticed how all the things people have suggested cost such stupid amounts of money, i'd rather go out on the town with my mates and pay £3 to get in somewhere with cheap drinks than pay £7 or whatever it is now to sit in dark room watching a movie i can buy on the cheap off the dvd bloke and pause when i need toilet break.

i agree we need more police in the areas with the most trouble i go in big bar every weekend which is known for trouble but when you walk out the door where are the police no where to be seen.

Warrington at the moment is at its worst for violence and drink and drug related crime! Dont get me wrong, im out on the town every friday and saturday til stupid hours of the morning and i watched the fight that sky news caught on camera from Mccauleys window!
But why should violence like this stop us from going out? It certainly wont me.
You've got to remember, its not only warrington thats like this - its the rest of the UK in general. The reason we're getting highlighted is because this town is the newcomer to this sort of society and it will only get worse, no doubts about it!
Theres only one person to blame for society today and thats the government!
There's no justice for anything anymore, as shown with the Newlove case and until justice is seen to be doing, things will never get better!
It should be a life for a life - end of!

Bring back hanging! thats what i say!

I go out in warrington all the time, have done for a few years. I've never once run into trouble. Is that because im lucky? No, its because I don't go looking for it, and if trouble heads my way, I move on. Its simple as!! Its the few idiots that do actually go looking for trouble that give Warrington such a bad name. The majority of people there are just out for a good time.

What we are dealing with here is a wider social problem by no means limited to boundaries of Warrington.

Societies ills have become more and more violent, with civil liberties comes civil responsibilities, I completely understand both sides of the arguement here. What i would say is that if you do feel unsafe going out then dont go out, BUT you shouldnt have to feel unsafe about going out.

Whilst you may not live in fear, dont live in ignorance of what could happen, turning the other cheek is very easy to say, if someone insults your wife or girlfriend while youre out would you say "Whilst not agreeing with your point im not prepared to argue about it", no you wouldnt, unfortunately these situations escalate beyond previous natural levels.

As a society things need to change and ive been going to town since i was 17, in the intervening 9 years it hasnt become a battlefield but it is more of a violent place.

Widnes is an example of how there are plenty of other people in towns like this who are worse off than Warrington.

As for cinema and la bowl well if I was in my schooldays yes I would go but im not.

As for going out for meals if I was in my 50's i might do, but I'd prefer to have my money for having a good time not sitting in a pancy food diner.

And where are these decent bars where I can go for a friggin drink? Dont tell me Stockton Heath, its a place full of snobs, toffee nosed posers and wannabe wide boys.

Town doesnt have a decent sized concert venue for a start, no decent nightclubs, maybe the new smiths could be that, so its far from being a place which has a lot to offer the youth of today.

It is you that is wrong so get with the flow you are so far away from life my friend that it is unreal.

You are never going to change the fact that after a hard week peaple will want to go out and get drunk plain and simple, plus i have drank in Warrington for the past 15 years and yes it is getting worse but it allways has been a town centre with a lot of self styled big fish in a small pond. I dont think the Sky news report was fair - you think the wire is bad try Wrexam on a Saturday night.

The problem with this town is that scum breeds scum, the same as anywhere else in the country.
Certain people go out to town with the sole purpose of acting hard and looking for trouble, the alcohol whilst a catalyst is not always the cause.
I've lived in this town all my life and for the last 20 years have gone out and had a good drink on a saturday night, in many different places throughout the town.
I've spent time in Stockton Heath and I've seen drug taking with my own eyes recently, which is something I've never witnessed before. I've spent time in the town centre and seen fighting, and in my opinion it has got worse over recent years. I've spent time in pubs in Grappenhall including the now demolished Dog & Dart where I've seen fights. I've seen trouble in the old Showboat at Howley, I've seen trouble in pubs in Lymm several times. You should be getting the jist of this now, I've seen loads of trouble over the years all over the town and on each ocasion I'd been drinking, useually to excess, and not once have I started or become involved in it other than to help split people up. That is because I was brought up well and I have a brain, either that or I'm dead lucky.
In summary it's easy to blame the drink but the problem lies with the individuals, some sadly look for trouble, and in most cases a little intelligence on the part of each involved party can avoid the need for violence.

I for one won't be going anywhere soon but would love all the trouble to dissappear. Every decent person must want the same, surely.

It's not that people dont like warringto - they don't like what its become!
Fights don't always kick-off because people dont keep their mouths shut. And why should people keep their mouths shut?
Looking back at the Garry Newlove case... he had scum rats destroying his property, why should he have kept his mouth shut? If he had nothing would have happened to the youths vandalising! Its just not right that he does open his mouth and subsequently gets killed!
As i said before, until theres justice, things will only get worse!

Girls I think you miss the point here a little. I think most people who have commented here LOVE Warrington, but are concerned how things have changed for the worse over recent years. I for one won't be going anywhere soon but would love all the trouble to dissappear. Every decent person must want the same, surely.
Totally agree with 'Fact'... but why let these scumbags make you stay in? I know they wont let stop me going out every weekend!

I am fed up seeing a negative picture of Warrington in the media. It is very sad what happened to Gary Newlove but its no different to what could happen and does happen in other towns and cities across the UK with a similir population to Warrington. Yes there is an issue with youngsters drinking and then causing trouble but thats the way britain is these days and its not just inside Warrington.

Yeah, you've just got to understand both sides to the story and stop being so naive!
YES theres trouble everywhere, and
YES we're the most recent town to have all this trouble!
But just because we 'LOVE' where we live like you've said previously doesnt mean we should just turn a blind eye and hope it goes away.
I get pi**ed up in town everyweek, and have been in fights before but now its getting beyond a joke. FACT - this town has always had touble (like everywhere else) but now it's f**king rediculous!

Sky are well out of order with this film!
They pick the busiest weekend of the month when everyone gets paid after xmas!! trying to make out its like that every week!
Its a town centre they are all the same at weekend, ive been going town for over 20 years and theres always been fights!! Why bring it up now? In fact its a lot better now than it use to be!
I say Warrington is a great place to live with a great night life! Anyone who says different should move to Runcorn or Widnes they will then see how lucky they was to live in Warrington!

The casuals are all out this weekend in town!
Casual army, casual army!

The Warrington you all paint is light years from my birthplace of yesteryear.
I have lived overseas for many a year now and visited Wiretown last year and didn't recognise the place. I have no first hand experience of the town at weekends but if it is typical of the visions of the UK I see on BBC World Service you can keep it.

the people that fight are the people that are drunk so lets just not let them in the clubs

Well well, I think just looking at the majority of the comments above speaks volumes! Most of you are illiterate! The amount of alcohol these idiots are consuming is a problem but that is not the full story, It's also the basic mentality of people that is the problem. So excluding alcohol and drugs to a degree you can put this behavior down to the government, parents, schools, police etc for this. Not forgetting the actual scumbags themselves.

Just looking at some of the above responses:
"Answer someone back and ur asking for trouble, if you wanna stick up for yourself, be handy with your fist, if not, just keep quiet." it's people like YOU and YOUR mentality that are the problem! Sigh!

Warrington has been going to the dogs for years. Ever since I used to frequent the town centre in the late 80's and early 90's there have been fights, more fights, people throwing up all over the place. All in the name of a good time.

Leave now while you still have the chance.

Seek ye a better life, someplace else.

Warrington is the pits.

Leave now while you still have the chance.

Seek ye a better life, someplace else.

Warrington is the pits.

Steven,
What has your Nana already told you?
You are forbidden to go out and as for 'going on a bender', you well know what the E numbers in the Cola does to you.
If you are going out it will be to the Bingo with me. Now stop being such a naughty boy.

You are Nana's little Angel and stop pretending otherwise.
