‘Hung out to dry’

ELITE swimming clubs could get less time in the water in order to give children who can't swim more lessons.

The recommendations, made in a report by the council's leisure services department, state that more time needs to be given to four key groups: children who cannot swim 25m by age 11; people with disabilities; lessons for those with specific requirements such as women from ethnic communities; and adult swim lessons.

Warriors of Warrington, the swim- ming team, will continue to be supported, the report said.

Elite teams have already had to downsize, after Warrington Baths closed in 2003.

Elite training squads currently receive 10 hours pool time during peak midweek periods.

But the best swimmers spend around 21 hours a week swimming, said Warriors' chairman Andrew Callaghan.

"We've got swimmers in the 2012 Olympic potential team," said Helen Thornton, whose daughter swims for the Warriors.

"How are they meant to develop?" she asked.

The change would most likely mean the elite squad would train early in the morning and late at night, but the time between the sessions would not be enough for their bodies to recover.

l More than 600 pupils left junior school without being able to swim 25m in 2006.

A council spokesperson said: "The council is currently looking at swimming provision across the borough to ensure that all young people are able to actively participate in swimming."

More information will be available next week.

After reading the above article as a swimmers parent I find it disgusting that the council are prepared to disregard the level of commitment these children have in there chosen sport!! i firmly believe that the council should continue there support with the water space and coaching as it seems apparent that from the initial closing of Warrington baths they are looking for any excuse to try to close a highly successfull and motivated club, shouldn't they be encouraging children as is the government promoting healthy lifestyle and activities. These children attend swimming not as a recreational sport but because they have high hopes of becoming the best in the county, region and country.
As a parent who fully supports my child I too have to make sacrifices, all parents have to do this it is not only the children that are dedicated but also the families and coaches. Do the council have any idea of how hard these children work and keep up there studies often to an extremely high level. I am certain if we were a rugby, athletics or football club there would not be an issue!! Warrington should be proud of the Warriors Swimming Club and support them!!!!

As a parent of a swimmer in the Elite training squad I find the recent news appauling and I am very disappointed in the borough council. The council should be proud of these talented and commited swimmers and making an example of them to encourage others. The club, swimmers, coaches and all the volunteers who help deserve support and commitment from the borough council. Warrington has some very talented and fantastic swimmers, I am proud for my child to be a part of this swimming club and hope the borough council do not let anyone down.

It's the same where ever you go, the local council's and government have forgotten 1 fundamental thing in everything they do and that is the youth of today is the future. The local council need to be investing and encouraging this swimming team. I mean on another thread they want to give "problem" children £35 per week to behave but the children that are striving for the future, are doing something with themselves and keeping out of trouble are being penalised. It doesn't make sense, reward the bad behaviour and penalise the good. Gone a bit backwards there somewhere. No wonder we can no longer walk the street safely.
Goodluck to the swimming club.

I am absolutely disgusted with the Councils proposals in their Focus on Change document regarding withdrawal of crucial pool time and expert coaching. As a proud parent of a Warriors of Warrington swimmer, who not only is a member of the English Talent Regional Programme, but also at the tender age of 14years has been selected for the British Swimming 2012 Olympic Training Squad and is on the verge of international career as a youth/junior swimmer, I am perplexed at the Councils attitude to such committed and extremely talented young individuals who have real potential in representing their country in such prestigious events. In its proposal it states it would like to use some elite swimmers in order to inspire younger generations, why then is it so willing to simply dismiss its major contender. This situation could be devastating for current and future talented athletes. I implore the council to readdress and re-evaluate its position. The level of commitment all members of Warriors show including swimmers, volunteers and coaches should be applauded and congratulated, not discouraged or opposed. Warrington should be proud of its achievements in all sporting areas and should fully support its young stars. These swimmers need their current level of water space to maintain and develop their standard of swimming, therefore I petition the Council to re-think its recommendations.

As a swimmer, I think this is unbelievable we shouldn't even have to go through this, the council should be supporting us not trying to tear the club apart, we do something that we want to do and what do we get in return... NOTHING!!!Were not asking for millions of pounds all we would like is a bit of support now and then......because believe me this would go a long way!We train a minimum of 12 hours a week and we have to make sacrifices nearly every day due to our commitments!
we have hopes and dreams of becoming a star but some of us may not get that far. And believe it or not you will not find kids as hard working as us every day!!

Each & every parent who has or has had a child in the Elite training squad has ivested financially within the leisure services over many years & commited a lot to time to their young person to get to this level. You dont just become a squad swimmer. Many of these young people have been taken to all of the towns swimming pools regulary by their parents from being babies, up through the swim scheme classes & into the Warriors groups via swim link. To remove the squads removes this potential for all towns folk of warrington. The closure of warrington baths reduced the water available for school swimming lessons. The swim teachers have an inpossible task to get someone from being a non swimmer to a swimmer in a very short period of time. By the time children are in school swimming lessons unless Parents take their child regulary then the task will remain impossible. There is a concesionary card scheme for those on certain benifits already. The elite training scheme only used ONE pool during peak hours. Competitive swimming is a lifestyle which teaches young people a lot more than how to race. Many of them start their day at 4.30am & have to be self diciplined & organised to get themsleves, kit to various pools around the town. They still have the demands of homework & social lives all other young people do & they learn how to be very organised. Many of these individuals are A & A* pupils as they dont sit for hours infront of televisions / computers or hang about on street corners for hours on end drinking, smoking / drug taking & causing violence.
As a parent of a Swimmer who attended council run duckling classes and who is now on British Swimming's English Talent programme & urge the town to support young people who are staying out of trouble and wanting to reach their potential. The town has every possibility of gaining some more sporting hero's in Swimming.

As a parent of one child who is a member of Warriors Swimming Club (and is very proud of the fact) and another who participates in the Warrington Swim Scheme, I feel compelled to write regarding the article ‘Hung Out To Dry’, where the Council propose to effectively ‘pull the plug’ on Warriors by reducing pool and coach time. All members of the Club train extremely hard and the commitment and dedication shown by all involved are a credit to them.

However, time and again the question is asked why it is that Britain is short of World Class sportspeople? Perhaps it’s situations like these that are a contributory factor. Warriors have members with World Class potential and with the Olympics due in 2012 we may well see them participating. Every support and opportunity should be given to the Club rather than withdrawing their facilities and interfering with their structured training schedules.

Both my children love swimming and any child that displays an interest in a sporting activity these days should be encouraged and supported and given every opportunity to pursue it to their full ability. Warrington should be proud that at the moment, we have such a great swimming club that can provide this – long may it continue to be so.

Both my children love swimming and any child that displays an interest in a sporting activity these days should be encouraged and supported and given every opportunity to pursue it to their full ability. Warrington should be proud that at the moment, we have such a great swimming club that can provide this – long may it continue to be so.

Perhaps itÂ’s situations like these that are a contributory factor. After reading the above article I have to say how appalled I am that Warrington Borough Council can even think of treating our children in such a way. The proposal to withdraw coaching support and water time for these swimmers is ridiculous. What sort of an example are the council setting to these youngsters? Are they really to believe that it is ok to give with one hand and then take away with the other?
'Every child in Warrington counts'. Can we really believe that when the Council can do this to their own elite swimming squads?
My child has been swimming with Warriors for the last four years, two years within squads. The training has increased in difficulty and frequency with each group move up. He and the other children in squads show a level of commitment and dedication that many would find rare in a child of his age (12). Free time is scarce to say the least, but these children cope with that because they are taking part in a sport that they love, competing at high levels, both in the name of their team and for their town. Surely their town council should be as proud of them as they are of their club. I challenge any member of the council to attend training sessions for one week, and still muster up the energy for a full days work. For some of the swimmers this can mean 21 hours training in one week, with full school days and homework on top.
I ask that the council thinks twice before making a decision that affects not just one or two swimmers, but more like two hundred plus. Please show to them the level of commitment that they have shown to their sport and their town.
PLEASE DON'T LET THEM DOWN!!!!

A lot has been said about top swimmers in the town but I fear the real losers under the council's plan will be the many children from all corners of this town who never make the very top. But who do learn to love a sport that they can take part in for the rest of their lives. These children also deserve our support.
I recently took someone from out of town to a Warriors event, and they were amazed to see so many young people competing and supporting each other. They give us something to be truly proud of in Warrington. It's the children that do all the hard work - all they need from the council is the support to ensure there continues to be time made available for as many of them as possible to enjoy this fabulous sport to the full. Let them make us proud.

I am 8 years old and I swim for Warriors of Warrington. I love my swimming. I have been swimming in Warriors for 2 years now, and I am in B2 elite squad and train six times a week. Our coaches are the best. I don’t want to have to give up my swimming. One day I want to be an Olympic swimmer and I don’t want you wrecking my dream. I really don’t want to train late at night when I have got school. I want to swim for Warrington, but now I may have to swim for somewhere else. We are always told it is good to be healthy. It‘s better to have a hobby that you like or love and keeps you fit, than to sit and slob on MSN all day and to hang about outside shops. It‘s good to learn how to swim but sad if you can’t carry it on afterwards and if your town isn’t proud of you. Please support us Warrington.

I am absolutely appalled at the council's proposal to reduce the available pool time to the Warriors Elite squads. The council appear quite prepared to scarifice the potential of scores of young, dedicated and indeed, talented swimmers for the sake of what? to free up pool time for swimmers of age 11 and are unable to swim? what is happening in the school curriculum where swimming is a mandatory requirement?

Are the council suggesting that 11 year olds would want to enrol in swimming lessons at that age? If they had a desire to swim at all, they would have done so before reaching that age.

I have a child attending council swimming lessons. During those lessons the main pool, whilst available for public swimming is virtually empty - the council should undertake more research and find out exactly when pool time is available and when the pools are being under-used.

The Council needs to wake up to the fact that in these days of child obesity and misbehaviour in it's region; the answer is not to punish children with a desire to achieve something in their lives and those that demonstrate a level of discipline that should be held up as a model for children everywhere.

It is time for common sense to prevail.

I'm 9 years old and I swim for the WOW elite squads. I train 6 times a week including Tuesday morning at 5.30am and Saturday morning at 6.30am for 2 hours. Swimming keeps me very fit but I still manage to do my homework.

I enjoy doing competitions for the warriors because I get to swim against other swimmers and not many children get the opportunity to do it.

I think the council should support us because we are representing Warrington when we swim!

I think its very sad.

This keeps me fit and healthy. If We were not to do this anymore mine and alot of other peoples lives would change.

As i live in warrington the Facilities are easy to get to.

I am just one out of the other hundred of people who do not want to be forced to move somewhere else.

So why is the council forcing us to do something we do not want to do?

Can you help to stop this from happening?

I am just one out of the other hundred of people who do not want to be forced to move somewhere else.

So why is the council forcing us to do something we do not want to do?

Can you help to stop this from happening?
