LABOUR'S Chris Vobe has pledged to 'get straight down to work' after storming to victory in the Winwick Parish Council by-election.

Mr Vobe, son of Warrington North MP Helen Jones, won yesterday's by-election for the Peel Hall ward.

He secured 151 votes, with Conservative Simon Nolan getting 21 and UKIP's Carl Foulkes 13.

Turnout was just below 15 per cent.

Mr Vobe held the Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft borough council seat between May 2012 and May 2016 before stepping down.

He said: "I am delighted that support for Labour in this part of Warrington North has increased.

"This election afforded the people of Warrington North the opportunity to send a strong message to the developers, to let them know in no uncertain terms that we'll fight tooth and nail to protect Peel Hall as the last green space in this part of the town.

"They sent that message loudly and clearly.

"I am extremely grateful to those residents who offered me their support.

"I will work hard for the community and make sure their interests are represented."

Mr Vobe also paid tribute to former Poplars and Hulme councillor Steve Roberts, who passed away a year ago this week.

At the time of his death, he represented the Peel Hall ward on the parish council.

Mr Vobe added: "It is a fitting tribute to my friend Steve Roberts that the area he represented and loved deeply has returned such a strong result for our party."

The Peel Hall ward forms part of Winwick Parish Council but is located in the Poplars and Hulme borough council seat.

The by-election was called following the resignation of David Williams.
