THE demolition of Barrow Hall Primary School is almost finished to make way for a new science block at Great Sankey High School.

Work has been under way for the past two weeks on the site.

The high school's proposal to build a single-storey block with 11 new laboratories came before the development management committee at the Town Hall last month.

It will be positioned on the area currently occupied by the former Barrow Hall Primary School buildings, where demolition work has taken place.

In planning documents, it has been confirmed that the science block will deliver 'up-to-date facilities' at the Barrow Hall Lane site and together with existing and proposed buildings 'would form a central plaza feature with a high-quality outside space'.

Threats posed by climate change have also been taken into account with the floor level raised 'to make an allowance for flood risk and for forecast climate change'.

Meanwhile a sports hall will provide 'a modern four-court' playing area with changing rooms and storage space to accommodate up to 60 people, in line with Sport England guidance.

And a new bridge that is going to be built to allow pupils to get to the building from the current scho0ol will cross a 'relatively narrow part' of a stream at the site.

It will 'tie directly into' an existing access route to the current humanities block – and to the southern side a new path will be provided, from the bridge, down to the playground.

The development could result in the loss of up to nine trees but planning documents say replacements are proposed.
