TWO men have been fined hundreds of pounds after they were caught collecting scrap metal without a licence.

Christopher Bennett and Michael Gray, both from Orford, were found out by enforcement officers during roadside stops carried out by Warrington Borough Council and Cheshire Police.

On Wednesday, August 15, each of the men admitted three offences at Warrington Magistrates Court after it was found they had operated as scrap metal collectors without having a licence.

Thirty-three-year-old Bennett, of Greenwood Crescent, was fined £350 and ordered to pay costs of £120 plus a victim surcharge of £35.

Gray, aged 48 and of Wilkinson Street, was fined £300 and made to pay £100 in costs as well as a victim surcharge of £30.

Cllr Judith Guthrie, Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for environment and public protection, said: “This sends a clear message to any individuals who are thinking about collecting scrap metal in a bid to earn some extra money that they must be licensed.

“Collecting scrap metal without a licence is not acceptable, and we will take action against any person found doing so.

“There are numerous licensed collectors, and the public are urged to check who they are handing their scrap metal over to.”
