EMERGENCY repairs to the Thelwall Viaduct will cause closures on the M6 again tonight, Thursday.

One lane of the northbound carriageway has been shut between junction 20 at Lymm and junction 21 at Woolston since Tuesday afternoon due to damage sustained to a metal expansion joint on the motorway bridge.

Repairs have been taking place in the first lane close to the exit at junction 21, although traffic is still able to leave the motorway at this point.

Similar repair work had previously taken place on the Thelwall Viaduct on Sunday night, with two lanes of the M6 and the exit slip road for junction 21 will also be closed as a result.

This will continue tonight, Thursday, with closures set to be in place from around 10pm.

Motorists will be diverted via junction 22 at Winwick, where they can re-join the M6 southbound and exit at junction 22.

Meanwhile, wear and tear will also see a bridge joint on the southbound carriageway repaired tonight.

Two lanes of the M6 and the entry slip road at junction 21 will shut during this time.

Motorists wishing to join the motorway southbound will also be diverted via the northbound carriageway.
