AIRCRAFT enthusiasts in Warrington got to see stars of the Blackpool Airshow today, Saturday.

The planes were spotted in the skies over the town today as Warrington lies between Liverpool and Manchester airports allowing the planes to fly safely.

A flight of four aircraft flying in formation was spotted at around 11.50am, which would have been either Turb Team (aerobatic team), or The Blades Aerobatic Team.

Later, just after 2.15pm, the distinctive shape of the Fairey Swordfish flew over north Warrington.

This biplane torpedo bomber was already obsolete when it came into service in 1936, and was retired at the end of the war in 1945. Despite this, it saw action in all theatres of the war and achieved some notable victories, such as sinking and damaging Italian battleships during the battle of Taranto, and the attack on the German battleship, Bismarck, after she had sunk HMS Hood.

The obsolescent aircraft attacked against heavy defensive fire and managed to cripple the battleship allowing a Royal Navy force to catch her, and she was destroyed in the subsequent battle.

At the end of the war the Swordfish had destroyed a greater tonnage of enemy ships than any other allied aircraft.
