IF you were stranded on a desert island what items would you take with you?

Baroness Helen Newlove has shared which eight tracks, a book and a luxury she would take with her when she made her debut on the BBC Radio Four's Desert Island Discs.

The wife of dad-of-three Garry Newlove, who was brutally murdered outside his home in Fearnhead 11 years ago, spoke to radio presenter Kirsty Young to share the soundtrack of her life while talking about her life-changing work as victims' commissioner.

The historic BBC show was first recorded in the bomb-damaged Maida Vale studio in January 1942 and aired in the Forces Programme.

It was introduced to the listening public as 'a programme in which a well-known person is asked the question, if you were to be cast away alone on a desert island, which eight gramophone records would you choose to have with you'.

Many of the songs selected by Helen reminded her of her late husband Garry including The Gap Band's classic party anthem Oops upside your head.

She said: "It reminds me of the next stage in my life when I met Garry and, even now looking down at the title, it reminds me of the fun side of Garry.

"Garry was very social, he loved music, he was a DJ and if he went to party and this was played nobody would be allowed to sit down.

"He would get everyone up on the floor and lead them."

Helen was also asked which book and luxury item she would take with her – War and Peace by Leo Tolstoy and lipstick were top of his list.

Here are the eight tracks picked by Helen Newlove when she took a trip down memory lane:

  • Andrew Strong and the Commitments - Mustang Sally

  • Donny Osmond - Puppy Love

  • The Gap Band - Oops upside your head

  • Grease with John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John - You're the one that I want

  • The Real Thing - You to me are everything

  • Dirty Dancing with Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes - The time of your life

  • Sting - Fields of Gold

  • Morecambe and Wise - Bring me sunshine
