A NATIONAL maritime charity is sending out a DIY SOS call to skilled craftspeople to help save one of their vessels in Fiddlers Ferry boatyard.

The Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) is dedicated to changing lives by training people in nautical skills and then using those skills to support communities.

One of their vessels, 'The Curlew' now lies at Fiddlers Ferry boatyard in Penketh and is in urgent need of expert help.

The vessel was originally in service with what was then HM Customs and Excise where she helped prevent contraband entering the UK.

When she retired from active service she was gifted to the MVS where plans are in place to use her to support young people, disadvantaged people and veterans.

Unfortunately, Curlew is showing her age and needs some tender loving care.

Chris Todd, vice chairman of the MVS, lives in Great Sankey and has volunteered for the MVS for 12 years.

He said: "We help integrate people back into the community who have perhaps got into trouble and give them a sense of worth.

"I'm a trained marine mammal medic and helped save a seal in Whittle Brook.

"But we also do easier jobs such as volunteering at the Duck Race at Salford Quays to help keep the public safe near the water."

Chris and the team would love to hear from people who could spare a few hours and skills to help repaint her and reapply her anti-fouling.

A carpenter is required to refit the engine covers and wheelhouse headlining.

The boat's two diesel engines would also need be serviced by a suitable fitter.

If you could help the MVS at Fiddlers Ferry Boat Yard, contact Chris on chris.todd@mvs.org.uk.

The MVS has more than 20 active units around the coasts and estuaries of the UK, with their national HQ in Westbrook.

The organisation’s aims are to help to keep the UK’s maritime tradition alive by training and delivering practical seamanship and engineering skills.
