GARY Sharples and Michel Forrester, a newcomer to angling, enjoyed a day they spent at our Mowpin fishery.

They had the water to themselves, and began by feeding pellet and grated luncheon meat.

It didn’t take long until Michael was into his first fish; a roach of a few ounces that was soon followed by others.

Gary had a 2½lbs common on luncheon meat and then the rudd, attracted by loose-fed red maggot, moved in.

Dave Gardner went to High Legh Fisheries on Friday with Ken Watkin.

The former found the going slow while his companion bagged up on rudd, roach, and a couple of perch.

Dave landed a carp and a couple of roach around the pound mark, but the target carp congregated under the trees out of reach.

Our bailiff reports from Sandiway Lakes are showing good tench catches to 8lbs from the large water and plenty of carp to 25lbs from the small one.

I have heard on the grapevine, although it hasn't been confirmed, that a 40lbs specimen has come out of this fishery.

Take note that on Saturday an endurance riding event will see horses pass by using the bridleway.

Our Mersey Series match on Saturday was won for by match organiser Ray Boden with a margin of close to 2½lbs over runner-up Chris Wray.

He fished pole and maggot tactics for a net of roach and perch for 8-10-0.

Alan Faulkner used all his experience to take first prize on Sunday in the Briars Cup Open, fished on the River Mersey at Victoria Park.

His catch included a few hybrids to 6oz, roach and perch taken using pole and maggot tactics for a weight of 13-12-0.

So overwhelmed by his victory, he went for a quick dip while he was putting the fish back.

Meanwhile Jimmy Byrne won our Monday match, fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickering's Bridge, after weighing in an all-roach catch of 3-9-4 taken on both bread punch and pinky.
