SELLAFIELD is opening its doors to children across town for an engineering open house day

The day, organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology, sees more than 30 companies and organisations open their doors to children to showcase inspiring careers in engineering.

The educational and fun-filled event on Thursday, August 2, allows visitors to the Birchwood Park base to experience the world of engineering first-hand and get an insight into the reality of the careers on offer.

Sellafield is one of 30 participating organisations across the UK. The event will include a mixture of short hands-on engineering activities, showing the breadth of engineering at Sellafield.

All the places on the event have been snapped up, with 102 “engineers of the future” taking advantage of this rare opportunity to see behind the scenes at Sellafield Ltd’s offices in Birchwood.

Nigel Fine, IET chief executive, said: "With 2018 officially declared the year of engineering, there’s never been a better time to engage with and inspire children and parents to help them better understand how exciting and diverse a career in engineering can be.

“The research highlights a knowledge gap about the engineering profession, so it’s important that we continue to work together and change these outdated views of what engineering is perceived to be.

"The open house day offers a unique opportunity to visit some of the most exciting and innovative brands and learn how engineering sits at the heart of many things we know and use.”
