A MOTORIST has been arrested after the M6 was closed following a crash involving two cars.

A crash shortly before 11.30am shut all lanes of the southbound carriageway between junction 19 at Knutsford and junction 18 at Holmes Chapel.

Congestion was reported back to junction 20 at Lymm, with the M56 also impacted.

Two ambulances have attended the scene, with the air ambulance having also landed at Knutsford Services to assist casualties.

The driver of one of the vehicles, who was uninjured, has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of cocaine and cannabis.

All lanes have since been reopened, but the M6 southbound was shut again at around 1.30pm due to a second accident between junctions 21 and 20.
