A COLLEGE has removed cladding from its £10m building after it was deemed to be unsafe.
Investigations following the deaths of 71 people in the Grenfell Tower disaster in June last year found that cladding used in the construction of University Technical College Warrington on Dallam Lane was a fire hazard.
Contractors used for the project confirmed that the cladding is aluminium composite material, types of which are unsuitable for buildings taller than 18 metres.
And work to remove the dangerous materials from the outer shell of UTC Warrington began this week.
The college has remained open since checks by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were carried out in March.
Builders had originally told the Department for Education that the building’s cladding was ‘not of concern’.
UTC Warrington first opened in September 2016 at a cost of £10m.
