A KEEN cyclist whose daughter was diagnosed with a life-changing condition will tackle the Ride London Surrey challenge to raise funds for others like her.

Richard Whitehead, 41, is hoping to complete the 100-mile cycle through London on Sunday, July 29 for Children's Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF).

His 10-year-old daughter Matilda, a pupil at Appleton Thorn Village Primary School, fell ill last summer and has since been undergoing tests and treatment.

“Her normal high energy levels plummeted, she went off her food and developed little spider veins on her face," said Richard, a police officer with Cheshire Constabulary.

"Following blood tests, she was sent straight to the Liver Unit at Leeds General Infirmary where she was subsequently diagnosed with the rare liver disease, auto-immune hepatitis.

“This was a tremendous shock to all of us and the past year has been difficult for the whole family, especially Matilda, who has been incredibly brave. During our time in hospital we were fortunate to be supported by staff from Children’s Liver Disease Foundation, such kind people who understood our situation with the most profound empathy.

“Living with a liver condition is not easy for any child. The emotional impact of the diagnosis is tough and we still can’t relax as blood tests are showing that her liver is still poorly."

Dad-of-two Richard said it was for this reason that the family found it valuable to take part in an outward bound weekend with CLDF in October, where they met other families who have been affected by childhood liver disease.

He added: "We heard lots of stories from families who had experienced far worse liver issues with their children. Seeing how the charity brought these families together made it important for me to give something back.

“I enjoy a challenge and cycled from Manchester to London three years ago in 11 hours so I’m hoping my legs can push me round London.

“I’ve had a great response to my fundraising from friends and our colleagues at Cheshire Police and have already beaten the £1,000 target I set myself.

"I’m amazed by the response but Matilda is so well liked and our friends have seen how this has affected her and us as a family. I now just want to raise as much as I can to ensure CLDF continues to be there for Matilda and other children like her.”
