A ROOFER who suffered a serious cycling accident has raised more than £4,000 for the NHS with a 220-mile ride from Appleton to Buckingham Palace.

Fifty-year-old Guy Sell and his friend Tim Grensinger, who lives in Northwich, cycled in honour of the orthopaedic ward at Aintree Hospital on July 1.

Guy suffered several broken ribs, a punctured lung and damage to his shoulder and collar bone last year, spending 10 days in hospital and undergoing a three and a half hour operation.

The pair set off from Guy's home, in Appleton, at 4.50pm reaching London shortly after 10am the next day.

"We had to stop a few times and throw water over ourselves," said dad-of-two Guy.

"I'd printed a map of the route and split it into 45 mile sections where we met my dad and son. Here we were able to restock on water and energy bars and set off again.

"Obviously it was hard but it's surprising what you can do with positive thinking.

"We managed not to get lost and really enjoyed it. I am also glad to of raised so much money."
