BIRCHWOOD Way should be back to two lanes today, Friday, after long delays for motorists this week.

A section of the road had been reduced to one lane while gas main works took place causing lengthy queues and some drivers reporting a 20 minute journey was taking more than an hour during rush hour.

A Warrington Borough Council spokesman said: “Work to divert a large gas main at College Place roundabout has been taking place.

"As one of the joints onto the existing main is located at the westbound entry to the roundabout, we've had to close the right-hand lane until Friday 13 July to enable us to complete this work.

"Unfortunately it's not possible to close the lane outside of working hours, so we're working as quickly as we can.

"We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

However it's not the last time motorists will be delayed on this section of road this year.

Birchwood Way's westbound carriageway is set to close for five months.

The closure, between Crab Lane and Blackbrook Avenue, will come into force on August 1 until mid-December as part of the Warrington east phase two project.

The scheme is designed to improve overall traffic flow along the Birchwood Way by reducing congestion, improving road safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians.

There will be a diversion in place along Crab Lane, Enfield Park Road and Blackbrook Avenue.
