TWO Good Samaritans who risked their lives to extinguish a car engulfed by flames on the M62 feared someone could have been trapped inside the burning wreckage.
Rick Lowry, 32, and his colleague Dave Lowry, 29, were on their way back to the yard where they work in Irlam when they spotted a car bellowing with smoke.
The fire quickly took hold of the car which had stopped in the third lane of the motorway between between junction 21A at the Croft Interchange and junction 21 at Woolston on Friday afternoon triggering severe delays.
“We could see someone at the side of the road but we didn’t know if anyone was inside,” said former Padgate High School pupil Rick.
“Instinct kicked in. I had done some training with the fire brigade as part of the fire cadets.
“It was all adrenaline – we didn’t have time to think.”
The quick-thinking friends, who work for waster water management specialists IWJS, had some water on board from the jetting unit.
Dramatic footage captured by reader Stephen Mackie and shared by the Warrington Guardian shows the two men pulling over to douse the flames.
The public heaped praise on the two men for their brave actions.
After extinguishing the fire, the two men checked on the welfare of the driver who had escaped unharmed, before heading back to the yard.
But news had already spread of their heroic efforts after the footage was shared across social media.
Dave added: “Our instant reaction was to help.
“We’re not heroes, we were just doing what we thought was right.”
