A CHARITY single inspired by the Grenfell Tower tragedy has been released by Latchford musician Vicky Williams.

The song, entitled The Black Tower of London Song, is the debut track from the 38-year-old's upcoming album, due to be released later this year.

The former health and safety worker, collaborated with her dad Leonard Halliwell and a number of industry professionals, including promoter Tony Newbury who has worked with Amy Winehouse, to write, record and produce the single, which will raise money for the Harrow Club in London.

The youth club, which is located near to the Grenfell site, works primarily with young people in deprived neighbourhoods of West London to give them opportunities and a place to go.

It also offers those affected by last year's tragedy a range of support.

Mum-of-one Vicky recorded the single in October just four months after the disaster which saw a fire break out in the 24-storey tower block causing 72 deaths.

"Initially it was to heal because I was really distraught about what had happened, but I always had the intention of playing it locally at open mic nights in Warrington," said Vicky, who has been performing since 1997.

"I knew my dad shared the same views as me so I asked him to help with the lyrics.

"Once I started to play the song at open mic nights the response was very strong and this led me to record the song in the studio.

"I was worried about putting the song on the album and it was originally going to feature as a 'hidden track'. It was a difficult decision to make."

Vicky, originally from Cinnamon Brow, has visited North Kensington a number of times since the disaster, and more recently for the monthly silent march in May.

During a visit earlier this month, she performed at the Harrow Club to an audience of 13 to 18 year olds, a performance organised by club director Michael Defoe who featured in BBC documentary Grenfell.

She said: "There were young people coming up to me after the performance to say thank you. It was really emotional.

"During my time there I heard many sad stories about Grenfell and witnessed personally the strength from the local community.

"As a parent I can't imagine anything worse than losing your loved ones in a circumstance that tragic but I can imagine that when people are grieving it is hard to fight for justice.

"I hope this song helps in some way and I feel we are all in this together to raise funds and awareness."
