A PRIMARY school pupil who took on the responsibility of caring for her mum when she was diagnosed with breast cancer is raising awareness to help other young carers in Warrington.

Eleven-year-old Toni Olurin and her younger sister Lore, from Latchford, cooked, cleaned and cared for their mum Folas when she fell ill early last year.

It is a role many children take on in Warrington and their work is being highlighted during carers week, with Toni raising money for a charity that plays a vital role in the town.

“I was very sick and as a single mum I struggled to get Toni and her younger sister to school,” said Folas, who is of African heritage.

“Toni helped me out a lot. She would do the laundry, take the bins out, cook, give me my medication and change my dressings when I couldn’t.”

The St Benedict’s Catholic Primary School pupil would also arrange transport to and from school, for her and nine-year-old Lore.

Now in remission, mum-of-two Folas said the pair are hoping to raise funds for WIRED Young Carers with an African-themed fashion show at the Quebec Road school in Orford, on Wednesday June 27.

The organisation, based on Sankey Street, offers mindfulness sessions, drop-in sessions and support for young carers.

“When I got a bit better, Toni wanted to do something to help to raise awareness of young carers across Warrington,” added Folas.

“She has a good knowledge of fashion and draws a lot so we got in touch with the young carers team to help us to arrange a fashion show.

“I am so proud that she wants to do something she loves while also raising money.

“She wants to be an ambassador for young children.”

Volunteers have helped the youngster to sew and create designs for the event, which will feature four children who are young carers and 12 other St Benedict’s pupils as models at the event.

There will also be auctions and performances taking place on the day, with all funds going to the young carers organisation.

Starting at 6pm, children can enter for free with adult tickets priced £3.
