A LEADING councillor has backed a campaign to make sure the older residents in the community can stay sage.

Warrington Borough Council and the Warrington Safeguarding Adults Board is championing today, Friday's World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.

The day aims to raise awareness of the need to safeguard older residents and urge people to speak out through event within the community.

Nationally, around one in six older people experience some form of abuse in a community settings during the past year.

Cllr Pat Wright, executive member for adult social care and statutory health said: “World Elder Abuse Awareness Day gives us as a community a chance to raise awareness of such an important issue that affects many members of the community.

“The day hopes to bring to the attention of communities, beyond the awareness day itself, that vulnerable older people in our Warrington communities can suffer from neglect, victimisation and abuse and how important it is for communities to look out for them.

“Some of our elder residents are fearful of coming forward or speaking out. Here in Warrington we want to make sure that people can feel comfortable in approaching the relevant agencies for personal help and support.”
