TOLLS will be reintroduced at Warburton Toll Bridge next week.

The site will be closed, from 8pm to 9pm, on Monday while work to replace a payment booth takes place.

The booth at the crossing, near Lymm, was destroyed following a suspected arson in the early hours of May 10.

Temporary traffic lights are also planned to be in place on Tuesday, from 9.30am to 11.30am, to enable primary electrical connections to be made to the cabin.

And barriers are due to be installed on Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for Peel Ports, the site owner, said: "Further works will be required at a later date to fully restore normal operations, additional updates on this will be issued in due course.

"Tolling will be reintroduced on Thursday June 21.

"However, as it is not possible to fully restore the booth to normal operations at this time, tolls will only be charged in one direction at peak times."

The firm confirmed the direction of tolling during peak times will be determined on a 'day-to-day basis, taking into account traffic flows'.

The direction will be 'changed regularly' to ensure 'an equitable solution for the communities living on each side of the bridge'.

Motorists continue with their calls for the tolls to be removed from the site.

In February, Warrington North MP Helen Jones expressed her dismay at the Government’s response to her request that it repeals charges on sites including the Warburton bridge.

And this week the Department for Transport showed no signs of making any changes.

It said the 'operation and management' of privately-owned tolled crossings are 'a matter for the respective individual companies'.
