A MOTORIST has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving after their car overturned on the M6 this morning.

The motorway was shut southbound following the accident between junction 20 at Lymm and junction 19 at Knutsford at around 9.30am today, Friday.

One lane of the motorway was reopened at around 10.25am, with the other two remaining shut until around 1pm.

And the driver of the overturned car has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving following the incident.

They sustained only minor injuries in the incident, despite the car ending up on its roof.

Tailbacks of more than 10 miles were reported, with travel times through the affected area estimated at around two hours at their peak.

Roads throughout Warrington were also gridlocked this afternoon due to motorists diverting through the town.
