MEMBERS of the Salvation Army have been fundraising in Warrington today, Wednesday to raise money for the reopening of Strawberry Field Liverpool.

The team, based on Centre Park, have been selling strawberry cream tea with all donations going towards the cause.

Strawberry Field, in Woolton, was a home ran by the charity for some of Liverpool's most vulnerable children from 1936 until its closure in 2005.

It was during its time as a children's home that John Lennon found peace and refuge in its grounds, with it soon inspiring the 1967 Beatles' song, Strawberry Fields Forever.

Fifty years since the song was released, The Salvation Army are now hoping to reopen its famous doors to begin providing support and opportunities to young people with learning disabilities.

Once opened, it will become a hub for those in need to develop confidence, enjoy themselves and develop aspirations.

It will also be open to the public for the first time, giving people a chance to visit and learn about the place, song and John Lennon's early life while allowing people to experience spiritual exploration, retreat and pastoral care.

The charity has already received significant backing but it is also hoping to gain funding from donations.
