A WOMAN who was left hospitalised after being hit by a car feels lucky to tell her story.

Karen Collins, from Whittle Hall, was knocked down while crossing Winwick Road, near to Matalan, at around 5.50pm last Tuesday, May 15.

The 42-year-old was waiting to cross the road at the traffic lights, before making the decision to walk out between two stationary cars.

"I pressed the button and waited," said Karen, a former Penketh High pupil.

"Two cars stopped so I started to walk not realising the man was still on red.

"You are supposed to stop and look both ways, but I didn't do that. I wasn't paying attention.

"The driver was slowing down to turn right and I came from the two cars. I didn't see him and he didn't see me, the next thing I'm in an ambulance."

Karen, who is currently recovering at Warrington Hospital, underwent surgery the following the day after suffering a significant injury to her leg.

She also sustained some bruising and cuts to her head.

"I want to say thank you to everyone involved, even the driver who I am sorry for scaring," added Karen.

"He is a lovely chap and rang me to see if I was OK. I found out later that he had rang the police and ambulance and a lady had phoned my mum.

"The nurses on C20 have also been absolutely fantastic. Any problems the doctors are straight down to help, I really couldn't fault them."

The mum-of-two is now urging people to take care and be more vigilant when crossing the road.

She said: "I just don't want it to happen to anybody else.

“Please don’t rush and pay attention to what is around you. I was very lucky that I am here to tell my story.”
