A PROTEST song – which highlights the 'insane destruction' of the town – will form part of the evidence in the Peel Hall public inquiry.

An appeal against the council's decision to refuse Satnam's masterplan for 1,200 homes on the site has been adjourned, with an announcement over when it will resume to be made later this month.

On May 4, Grappenhall resident Helen Gurnani spoke at the inquiry at Orford Jubilee Neighbourhood Hub.

As part of her evidence, she sang a parody of the Walt Disney Records Colors of the Wind track after writing up alternative lyrics.

And the 51-year-old campaigner has this week confirmed she will be handing over a hard copy of the lyrics to planning inspector Richard Schofield once the inquiry resumes.

The lyrics are aimed to deliver a strong ‘message’ to the council, as well as developers.

They say: "You think we’re irrelevant peasants and you own so many places, I guess it could be so.

“But still I cannot see, if they're representing me, how come there was so much I didn’t know? We don't know.

“You own the land and everything you build on.

“Our town is just a dead thing that you claim but we love every brick and tree and creature and your greed and destruction is insane.

“You think the only people worth respecting are people who wheel and deal like you.

“But as time turns the pages it gets stranger – we find things we never knew, we never knew.

“Have you ever heard the fox bark by the TransPennine?

“Or watched the black-necked grebes on Moore Reserve?

“Did you take your dog for walks on Morley Common? Will the views of Sankey Valley be preserved?

“Well, the pumpkins talked about it, I have heard.

“Come shun the wanton carnage of our green space, come ban the vile destruction of Peel Hall – appreciate the beauty that’s in this place and accept you don’t have to have it all.

“The people of this place unite as family, communities across the town as friends, and we are all connected to each other – on our phones, via the web, that never ends.

“How high could the council debt grow?

“If they keep this plan, pretty soon we'll know.

“But you'll never sell our town off for Port Warrington.

“No matter to which party we belong, we are singing our defiance all together, for Warrington's protection standing strong.

“You may own our town, but still we're not backing down until you reject this plan and act to right the wrong.”
