A CARETAKER who dedicated more than 30 years of his life to Birchwood High School has retired.

Steve Kelly marked the end of an era at the high school on Monday, April 30 as he officially stepped down from his position at a celebratory afternoon tea.

The 60-year-old has worked as a caretaker for the school since 1987 and has watched it grow and change beyond recognition over the years.

Steve, from Padgate, has served under all three headteachers – Mrs Yates, Ms Bright and the current head Mrs Bryan.

He decided to retire to enjoy more time with his family who are keeping him busy.

Steve said: "I came to the celebration on the same bus that I have used for more than 30 years when I was on afternoon shift at school, and it was only then that it hit me how much I would miss Birchwood Community High School.

"I’ve made some really good friends and memories there that will stay with me forever.”

Head teacher, Moira Bryan, added: "We are so sorry to see Steve leave us, he has shown tremendous commitment to Birchwood Community High School over the 30 years he has been with us and he will be greatly missed.

"I wish him all the best and look forward to him calling in now and again to let us know what he is up to .”

Steve loves spending time with his grandchildren and says he doesn’t miss the long shifts at school.

At the afternoon tea, colleagues, old and new, came together to wish Steve well in his retirement.

Steve promised not to cry, but there was a definite wobble as Mrs Bryan presented him with his leaving gift.
