FORMER Warrington Wolves forward Gary Chambers will run a half marathon this weekend while pushing his friend’s disabled stepdaughter along the route in her wheelchair.

Prop Chambers, who made 210 appearances for the Wire over 11 seasons before hanging his boots up in 2000, is set to take on the Great Manchester Run today, Sunday.

He will be running to raise funds for the Reverse Rett charity, of which he is an ambassador.

The 48-year-old and charity co-founder Andy Stevenson, formerly of Burtonwood, will push the latter’s stepdaughter Amber along the 13.1 mile route in her wheelchair.

Amber, 22, suffers from Rett syndrome – a rare neurological disorder.

Gary and Andy have tackled the 10k challenge at the Great Manchester Run for the past two years, but will now step up their efforts to take on the half marathon.

Former Culcheth High School pupil Andy said: “We’ve done the 10k for the past two years but Amber enjoys the day so much that we’ve stepped up the longer distance.

“We have a big Reverse Rett team running in both races, so hopefully we’ll raise a good amount of money for Rett research.”

Gary is now a teacher at Harrop Fold School in Little Hulton, and featured in Channel 4’s Educating Greater Manchester last year.
