A TOWN centre pub could be named the best in the country for rugby league fans.

The King’s Head on Winwick Street has shortlisted for the Rugby League Fan Club’s Rugby League Pub of the Year award.

Having been a regular haunt for Warrington Wolves fans since the club’s move to the Halliwell Jones Stadium in 2004, the award recognises pubs close to rugby league grounds across the UK.

And the King’s Head is up against last year’s winner the Top House in Bradford as well as the Old Post Office in Halifax.

Pub manager Paul Yates said: “After all the investments we’ve made, there is now a real great core group of people who come in on matchdays.

“There’s a really good atmosphere here on a game day and we want to build on that.

“When we get away fans in, they have a great day and they mix really well.

“We’ve given people a place where they can come and enjoy their day.

“It’s the customers who have nominated us, which shows that they really enjoy themselves when they come here.”

Landlord Andrew Fannon added: “It’d be brilliant if we could win the award, and it would be nice for Warrington to win something for once!”

The King’s Head has recently undergone a significant revamp, with a new ‘shed’ created to the rear of the grade two-listed pub.

Andrew told the Warrington Guardian: “I feel that we’ve saved the character of the pub, but the new extension has added an extra dimension to the King’s Head to bring it into the modern age and attract a younger clientele.

“The King’s Head will still be the King’s Head but this extension will be a bit more upmarket.”
