A RUGBY league team are set to reunite to mark their captain’s 80th birthday this weekend.

Crosfields’s open age side lifted the Warrington Amateur Rugby League Cup 50 years ago this month.

Soap beat Woolston Rovers 18-0 in the cup final at Rylands Recreation Club back in May 1968.

And starring in the side was one of the leading figures at Warrington Borough Council.

Council leader Cllr Terry O’Neill played at hooker for the team, and is pictured with his head wrapped in a bandage on the picture (above) submitted by teammate Ray Dibble.

Ray was able to recall all but the player fourth from the right on the back row.

On the front row are Bernard Malony, Barry Johnson, Fred Wallington, Tommy Nolan, Peter Lowe and Bob Higgins.

Pictured on the back row are Norman Worrall, Eddie Bowler, Ray himself, Cllr O’Neill, Mike Donaldson, Keith Brindle, Bill Curnane and Reg Daintith.

Team members are set to reunite this weekend as their captain Tommy Nolan celebrates his 80th birthday.

All of Tommy’s former teammates are invited to attend his birthday celebrations - which will take place at the Tetley Walker Sports and Social Club on Long Lane tonight, Friday.

He has lost contact with many of the friends he played alongside in the 1950s and 1960s.
