THE timescale for the introduction of an automatic toll system at Warburton Toll Bridge is 'unaffected' following a fire which destroyed the site's payment booth.

A fire destroyed the toll booth at the crossing, near Lymm, in the early hours last Thursday.

The bridge, which costs 12p to cross, or 25p for a day ticket, has previously been the subject of complaints from motorists over congestion.

In January, it was confirmed an automatic 'free-flow' system and surface improvements would be introduced.

However, site owner Peel Ports' immediate focus is on installing a new payment booth.

A spokeswoman said: "We will be installing a new toll booth and restoring normal operations at Warburton Toll Bridge as soon as possible.

"As yet, we are not in a position to confirm a specific date.

"We are also still working towards installing an automated toll system.

"However, as this change requires a statutory process and public consultation, the timescales are unaffected."
