IT seems the memories of picture houses in Warrington are very fresh for a lot of you.

This week in Yester Years, we have been contacted about the Star Kinema and the Pavilion on Lovely Lane.

Pat Stringer, nee Crozier, dropped us a line about the Kinema.

She said: “After reading today’s Guardian it seems that the Star Kinema was a very popular place to go to.

“I went from being quite small to my teenage years when a group of kids used to go.

“There was never any trouble. We all sat together and laughed and cried at the films.

“This was early 50s. In those days the films changed three times a week and we always enjoyed them.

“It was sixpence down for the entry as we used to say.

“The picture you published a few weeks ago (pictured above) I also have.

“Featured on it is my Aunt Peg (Margaret Crozier) Aunt Alice (Dawbarn) Mr Powell, Eda Bennett and a girl named Lucy.

“The other gent was Jack.

“What lovely memories to look back on what will the kids of today have?”

Meanwhile Pete Cullen, from Warrington, has been in touch about his memories of the former Bewsey-based cinema the Pavilion.

Pete said: “About 63 years ago myself and a lad named Roy Gemmel, from Cartwright Street, were trainee projectionists at the Pavilion cinema on Lovely Lane.

“The main projectionist was Stan Hunter from Aitkin Street.

“He was having a night off.

“Somehow we got the reels mixed up, when in the middle of the main film ‘God save the Queen’ came on screen.

“We had to run down the stairs to tell the crowd to come back as the film was not over.

“Some had jumped on the Bewsey bus.

“The cinema shut down a week later.

“Do you remember it Roy?”
