A NEW musical work named Latchford Locks will be premiered by the North Cheshire Wind Orchestra at Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England High School in June.

Latchford Locks has been composed by the renowned British composer, Gary Carpenter, who is currently living in Wirral.

Gary Carpenter is professor of composition at the Royal Northern College of Music, a composition professor at the Royal Academy of Music, and was invited by the BBC to compose a new work for the opening night of the BBC Proms in 2015.

Gary has also provided music for many films including The Wicker Man and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy.

Latchford Locks is the second in a series of works inspired by the Manchester Ship Canal and commissioned by the NCWO.

Through a series of variations Gary brings to life different aspects of the canal from the Boggy Stream and the Stoney Sluices to the Goddess of Fruitfulness and the historic Black Bear Canal.

The NCWO is a community wind orchestra with around 30 members and has a 47-year history based in Warrington. The NCWO is a highly skilled amateur orchestra and perform music to a very high standard.

The group aims to support the music community through the commissioning of new musical works for wind orchestra through a commissioning fund set up by the NCWO.

Sir Thomas Boteler Church of England High School is nationally recognised for the provision of music and is committed to providing opportunities for students to experience different kinds of music.

Latchford Locks will be performed as part of the ‘Latchford Locks to the New World’ concert on Saturday, June 2 at 7.30pm.
