LABOUR party bosses have described John Dwyer calls for current police and crime commissioner David Keane to resign as 'ludicrous'.

Mr Dwyer spoke out on Tuesday after chief constable Simon Byrne failed to have gross misconduct charges against him thrown out.

The Conservative, who lost to Mr Keane in the race to be elected for the post in 2016, said the Labour man was doing a 'disservice to the post' and called on him to 'do the right thing' and resign.

But now Labour have hit back saying Mr Dwyer was 'grossly irresponsible' in speaking out now.

A spokesman from Warrington North Labour Party said: "John Dwyer's calls for PCC David Keane to step down are as ludicrous as many of the policies he put forward during his time in office.

"It might be timely to remind Mr Dwyer that he did not 'leave' the role of police and crime commissioner as he suggests in his statement – rather, he was voted out as residents across Cheshire gave their verdict on four years of Conservative failure.

"Whoever Mr Dwyer is purporting to speak for now, it is certainly not the residents of Warrington north or the county of Cheshire as a whole.

"For him to intervene at this stage of an ongoing hearing, when he knows full well that none of the parties involved are able to respond, is a desperate attempt to politicise a serious matter of public interest, and is grossly irresponsible.

"To air his views before any of the complainants have had the opportunity to present their evidence is the act which does a disservice to the hard-working men and women of Cheshire constabulary.

"Since his election, David Keane has overseen the introduction of the living wage for all staff – a real-terms increase in wages for many hard working local people, and ensured the office of PCC has become a white ribbon accredited office in a powerful stance against domestic violence, underpinning his commitment by becoming an ambassador for the cause.

"Against the tide, he has spearheaded the return of community policing locally, working to establish a named officer and base in every community.

"John Dwyer is out of touch and out of step. It is only Labour who are delivering tangible results for residents."
