THE Independent Office for Police Conduct (IPOC) has launched an investigation following the death of Angela Craddock.

William Smart, 54, of Winmarleigh Street in the town centre, remains in custody accused of the 40-year-old's murder following a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court on April 17.

A IOPC spokesman: “We have begun an investigation following the death of Angela Craddock.

"We are looking at the contact between Cheshire Constabulary and William Smart, the man charged with Ms Craddock’s murder, prior to her death.”

The IOPC, formerly the Independent Police Complaints Commission, oversee the national police complaints system and investigate the most serious incidents and complaints involving the police.

The case was referred to the IOPC by Cheshire Police.

Smart will next appear at crown court on June 15 to enter a plea.

A provisional trial date has been set by Judge Clement Goldstone QC for October 9, which is estimated to last five days.

A murder investigation was launched following her death on April 10.

The 40-year-old died in hospital after she suffered head injuries inside a flat on St Elphin’s Close in Howley.

Speaking on behalf of Angela’s family, her brother David Craddock issued a heartfelt thank you for the outpouring of support following her death.

The 38-year-old said: “We would like to say thank you for the many messages and kind words we have received from friends, family, the public, police and medical staff following my sister’s death.

“It is difficult to put into words how we are all feeling.

“Angela will be greatly missed by all her family and she will never be forgotten by those who knew and loved her. Claire, her much-loved cat, is safe with us.”
